Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a high-tech procedure in which doctor inserts a thin plastic tube (catheter) into an artery or vein in the arm or leg. From there it can be advanced into the chambers of the heart or into the coronary arteries. This test can measure blood pressure within the heart, how much oxygen is in the blood, and the pumping ability of the heart muscle. Catheters are also used to inject dye into the coronary arteries so they can be examined as well.

Cardiac CatheterizationThrough a joint venture with the Hoffman Heart Institute at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, ECHN has established a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory within Rockville General Hospital. It's unusual to find this high-level service within a community setting. The presence of this lab again demonstrates ECHN's commitment to bring the finest care to the communities we serve.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

The goal of Cardiac Rehabilitation is to restore people who have had a heart condition or heart surgery to the highest possible physiological, emotional, social, and vocational level. Cardiac Rehab is appropriate for people recovering from the following types of cardiac conditions:

  • Open heart surgery
  • Heart attack
  • Angina
  • Angioplasty
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Arrhythmia Pacemaker implantation

ECHN's Cardiac Rehabilitation programs combine education and carefully monitored exercise with group interaction and support. All participants are monitored while they exercise with a cardiologist's oversight, so they can feel secure that they are exercising safely without overexertion. At the same time, the camaraderie that develops among participants and with caregivers helps with emotional recovery.

Both Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital have been awarded Program Certification for their Cardiac Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Certification recognizes those programs rigorously reviewed by a national board and found to meet the outlined essential requirements for standards of care.

A personalized Home Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is offered in conjunction with Visiting Nurse & Health Services of Connecticut, for individuals who have trouble traveling to the hospital for the program.
